Burning the Cane Fields
24/Feb/2010 05:03 PM

This is from a shoot I did in Clewiston, Florida this morning. It is customary to burn the sugar cane fields just hours before harvesting. This reduces the waste from leaves and simplifies the cutting process. The burning does not harm the crop that is harvested. It did harm me somewhat as I got a little too close. Between 3 and 12 feet during the entire shoot. Toasted my face and arms a bit. To put a scale to things, the stalks pictured here are between 8 and 10 feet tall. I shot this sequence at 18 mm
.

My guides this morning, Karl Larsen, sugar cane plantation owner and Roger from the United States Sugar Corporation.

Empty rail cars disappearing in the mist wait to be filled with harvested sugar cane.
